Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong took a pitch to the face in the bottom of the second from Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles. Vogelsong quickly crumpled to the ground in pain. Though he was eventually able to pick himself up and sit down in a fairly alert manner, Vogelsong left the game, being carted off for medical attention.

Prior to the pitch, Pirates announcers ominously said “Don’t hit him” as the only thing Lyles couldn’t do, as the count on Vogelsong was 0-2. Seconds later, Vogelsong was on the ground. The 92 mph fastball from Lyles seemed to hit both the batting helmet and Vogelsong’s face, cutting him near the eye. Pirates trainer Todd Tomcyzk covered the side of his face with a towel while helping him. Some posted pictures of the gruesome scene to Twitter.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the outpouring of love & prayers for Ryan. He is stable & will be ok. Pirates will update more tomorrow.
